Mars & Saturn in Scorpio: Navigating Intensity & Transformation

Mars & Saturn in Scorpio: Navigating Intensity & TransformationYou have survived. This Mars and Saturn pairing, in deep Scorpio, may have pulled you into the depths of your being, but you are still here.

The past week or two has been intense to say the least. A check of the headlines will highlight some of the darkness which may be associated with this combination of planets and sign.

We are in the realm of Scorpio – the place beneath the surface. Scorpio is a sign in which still waters run deep. Anyone who is a Scorpio, or has planets like the Moon or Venus in Scorpio, will know of these deeper than deep depths.

Scorpio feels things at a level lower – or deeper – than many of us even comprehend. Yet, in this past week, we have all been asked, nay forced, to recognise the depths, and to be moved by more than we can normally manage, in our lives and collectively.

Even if you haven’t had a personally difficult week, the themes evoked in major news headlines will certainly have stirred uncomfortable feelings. Perhaps in your small corner of the world, issues or topics have bubbled up from the depths and created similar inner discomfort?

Your life may not have been changed or shattered, but your soul has surely been shaken.

Shaken to truth, shaken to honesty, shaken open.

For Mars and Saturn, especially in such a probing sign like Scorpio, will leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of progress. Truth matters and honesty will be essential for movement.

Best case scenario? Mars is guided by Saturn, such that your life – including your drives and impulses – is guided forward in a focused and measured way. And in return, Mars energises Saturn, warming up and activating that which has been frozen, stuck or stagnant.

What is it to be guided by Saturn? It’s to have sharp edges (Mars) smoothed down (Saturn), or worn smooth by time, trial or by tribulation. Not so that you lose hope or heart but so that you gain focus.

For to be guided by Saturn means remembering the end goal, and not wasting time on distractions or side passions. Being guided by Saturn means staying the course, keeping your eye on the prize and sticking to the plan.

To be energised Mars means to be called to action. Saturn has been drifting through Scorpio for almost two years, and this period, this now (late July – mid September) represents the quickening of the longer cycle. The dreams and inklings, the frustrations and problems, are all brought into sharp focus by Mars. The time to choose, to do or not do (according to Yoda, there is no try) is now.

But that said it may feel heavy, dark or confronting. Mars and Saturn are known as malefic, and they do bring some challenges. A challenge can be a choice, turning point or simply hearing no when you really want to hear yes. (Astrologers perspectives are different say when Venus and Jupiter, the benefics, join together, as they did recently.)

Saturn serves to crystallise your focus and direction, so while it may be difficult, any ‘no’ you receive now will help you say ‘yes’ to something else. Mars can help you respond more quickly or provide a ‘bounce back’, so that you more easily find new footing. Think of it as the cosmos’ way of pointing you in a better direction, one you may not chose for yourself but one from which you can benefit.

Anytime there is a major Saturn aspect, I always think of this motto:

‘Short term pain, long term gain’

How are you feeling? Can you relate? Do you know what in your chart Mars and Saturn will trigger? (A house? Planets?)
