Aquarius & Scorpio: Navigating the Tension Between Fixed & Fluid Energies

Aquarius & Scorpio: Navigating the Tension Between Fixed & Fluid Energies

It’s first quarter Moon time! The seed of a new cycle emerges and now again a new story is taking hold. The Sun and Mercury are preparing to enter Sagittarius by the end of the week and Autumn will give way to winter.

Let’s discuss for a moment the archetypal tension between Aquarius and Scorpio. Let’s think about the commonality of the two signs first. Both signs come during the middle of two dark, cold seasons. Scorpio as the firm sign of Autumn is most identified with decline, descent, loss of light, and the inward well of power storing up again. The Scorpion is fiercely protective and suspicious, a guardian of life through its closeness to death and darkness. On the other hand, Aquarius is the firm sign of winter, of pale clear skies and wintry isolation and vast distances. Aquarius is identified with the slow climb of light upward through darkness, of life taking shape by way of forms and equations.To grow by Aquarius is to be guided by a clear plan or a firm code, one slow and methodical step at a time.

When these two signs get together there is often a question about whether or not our lives are truly, deeply, and authentically aligned with the divine plan or “code” we aspire toward. Alternatively, there is often a deep insecurity that appears by this combination: “Am I deeply and safely identified with my ideals or my knowledge?” Do I know what I think I know? Am I as smart as I should be, or as smart as someone else? In what ways am I overcompensating, competing, or managing my intellectual appearance with others?”

Simultaneously there may be a strong desire under this transit to evaluate the honest to God authenticity of our ideals in relationship to how we’re living, what we do for a living, or who we’re in relationships with.
The defensiveness of the mind or intellect, as well as the use of the mind toward greater security all come to mind under this first quarter moon. Another question might be, “How do my ideas contribute to a feeling of safety in my day to day living?”

Images or ideas that come to mind:

* The cold/clear vision of the surgeon, his/her knowledge, the scalpel
* Competing ideas or intellects
* The contract we can’t escape from, must turn off the heart to get through
* The simplification and stabilization of ideas and understanding, creating more simplicity, more comprehensiveness, more protection
* Chemistry, science, and suspicious overcompensating rationality
* Rationality as a defense mechanism
* Rationality as passive aggressive
* Twisting the facts or information to fit a hidden agenda/motivation
* Space, defense systems, and engineered protection

Watch also for cliques, intellectual exclusivity or elitism, and vindictive or dogmatic idealism. Let’s remember that our ideas are always in a state of becoming and passing away…ideas change just as one season moves to the next. If our ideas are fortresses, cults, or well guarded palaces, how can we expect anyone to teach us anything new?

Prayer: Open the mind of the heart, so that we might stay seated firmly in the sanctuary of learning, rather than well guarded in the palaces of our defensive knowings.
