Sun & Moon Transits: A Simple Guide to Understanding Life Changes

One of the BEST ways to learn about transits, and to better understand your own chart, is to follow the transits of the Sun and Moon.

I know, I know. You want to know when your life will change, or a tough situation will get better, or when you might come into abundance or find new love. And all these things are important. And they can be determined from transits and other forecasting tools, like my favourite one, progressions.

But along the way to these big shifts you have to live every day, doing regular every day stuff. Work, bills, exercise, family, relationships, budgets and so on. This is where the Sun and Moon come in.

Moon Transits and Your Daily Mood

The Moon is the fastest moving planet. Its quick pace mean the Moon covers your entire chart in a month. If you follow the Moon, perhaps by the signs and thus through your houses, you can work out your personal monthly rhythm.

For instance, this morning I had weirdly booked a business meeting at 9am, before my 10am yoga class. This is not usually something I’d do. Typically I’d book a meeting on a non yoga day (hot yoga = sweaty = messy hair + extra showering!!!) but it worked for me and it worked for the woman I was to meet with.

It was only after organising the meeting that I realised the Sagittarius Moon would be on my Midheaven (also known as the MC which is the career point!) at the time of the meeting. Given the Moon moves so quickly, this Moon/MC aspect was only in play early Thursday morning and would pass by the time yoga was done. Astrology 1, regular scheduling 0.

I’ve long followed the Moon through my houses. I try to make my husband the focus when the Moon is in my 7th House of Relationships and always find myself doing finance stuff when the Moon is in my 2nd and 8th Houses. I’ve noticed that the Moon in my 8th by transit seems to be bill paying day! If you’re confused about houses try this handout or this article.

Sun Transits

I woke on Wednesday with a mad desire to write. For the first time in a couple of months I wanted to revisit a manuscript I’ve been working on, and was motivated to tackle the days other astro writing targets. And I got LOTS done. Of course, about half way through the day I realised the Sun in Pisces was transiting my Mercury in Pisces and voila! The idea for this post was born.

The Sun is a quick moving planet but still slower than the Moon. In the case of a transit from the Sun, you have just 1 – 2 days each year where the Sun will conjunct a planet in your natal chart.

If you’re not sure how your Mercury operates, or what kinds of things are really associated with your Saturn, watch for when the Sun makes its annual pass over that planet. It’s often easy to see the links between what happens on that day and the planet being activated.

I also follow the Sun through the houses in my chart. I know that February is my best month for laying low as the Sun is in my 12th House then.

December and January are always busy for me – with both work and social plans – as the Sun moves through my 10th and 11th Houses at that time of year.

You can use either the Sun or Moon as a timing and learning tool. Watch them move through the signs and around your houses. Notice when either the Sun or Moon passes over (makes a conjunction to) one or another of your natal planets.

This way you can literally use the celestial lights to deepen self understanding and learn about the main themes in your chart.

Do you follow the Sun and Moon through your chart or to your planets? Have you noticed any correlations?
