Glomerular Filtration: What Doesn't Pass Through?

The glomerular capillaries are very small blood vessels in the kidneys that filter waste products from the blood. Some substances cannot pass through the glomerular capillaries because they are too large or because they are bound to proteins. These substances include:

* Proteins, such as albumin and globulin

* Red blood cells

* White blood cells

* Platelets

* Bacteria

* Viruses

* Toxins

These substances are either reabsorbed into the bloodstream or they are excreted in the urine.
