Camelopardaloids: Understanding Extinct Giraffe Relatives

A camelopardaloid is an extinct group of mammals that includes giraffes, okapi, and their ancestors. Camelopardaloids first appeared in the Miocene epoch and were widely distributed across Africa, Asia, and Europe. They varied greatly in size, with some species reaching heights of over 5 meters (16 feet) tall. Camelopardaloids were characterized by their long necks and legs, as well as their distinctive head shapes. They were herbivores and their diet consisted mainly of leaves, fruits, and shoots of trees and shrubs. Camelopardaloids eventually became extinct during the Pleistocene epoch, around 11,000 years ago, due to changes in climate and competition from other herbivores.
