Sagittarius Constellation: Meaning, Origin & Mythology

Sagittarius is a constellation located in the Southern Hemisphere. Its name is derived from the Latin word "sagittarius," which means "archer." This is because the constellation is shaped like a centaur holding a bow and arrow. Sagittarius is one of the oldest known constellations, and it was first mentioned in Babylonian texts dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE. The Babylonians called the constellation "Pabilsag," which means "the shepherd's staff." The Greeks later adopted the constellation and renamed it "Sagittarius."

In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is associated with the centaur Chiron. Chiron was a wise and gentle centaur who was skilled in many arts and sciences. He was the tutor of many heroes, including Achilles, Jason, and Hercules. One day, Chiron was accidentally shot in the knee by Hercules with a poisoned arrow. The wound was so severe that Chiron could not be healed, and he eventually died. In order to honor Chiron, Zeus placed him in the sky as the constellation Sagittarius.
