In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is associated with the centaur Chiron. Chiron was a wise and gentle centaur who was skilled in many arts and sciences. He was the tutor of many heroes, including Achilles, Jason, and Hercules. One day, Chiron was accidentally shot in the knee by Hercules with a poisoned arrow. The wound was so severe that Chiron could not be healed, and he eventually died. In order to honor Chiron, Zeus placed him in the sky as the constellation Sagittarius.
