Sagittarius Constellation: Myth, Meaning & Mythology

Sagittarius, the Latin word for "archer," is identified with the centaur Chiron in Greek mythology. Chiron was renowned for his knowledge and his mentoring to famous heroes, including Achilles and Hercules. Chiron's position among constellations is shown holding a bow and arrow aimed towards Scorpius, the scorpion, in the sky. Legends depict him as voluntarily giving up his immortality and sacrificing himself to relieve Zeus's son Prometheus, which led Zeus to honor Chiron by forming a constellation with his likeness. It is believed that the centaur's shape only partially fits the asterism, prompting an additional interpretation that the "archer" in Sagittarius actually represents Hercules.
