The new (calendar) year starts with a potent Capricorn New Moon, which is conjunct power planet Pluto.
While January 1 is a relatively new date on which to celebrate the New Year, and is somewhat arbitrary, (read more on the energy of New Year’s here) it is nonetheless the date on which modern western culture celebrates as a turning point between old and new.
It’s a rather striking cosmic coincidence then that as 2014 starts, we’re blessed with a celestial new beginnings energy, a new Moon. This in itself bodes well for resolutions and fresh energy heading into the New Year.
In addition, the Capricorn New Moon that kicks off 2014 is further enhanced by a conjunction to intense Pluto. This adds a ‘purge and purify’ energy that suggests a radical shift between past and present is possible.
Pose of Power: Warrior II
In yoga this morning, the teacher described Warrior II as a ‘pose of power’. It’s a strong standing pose that requires strength and focus, but which in turn energises and empowers.
It could be said this pose represents this New Moon – a time when strength is called for, in part to help set a foundation, and in part to motivate you to powerfully pursue what matters.
The power pose seemed an apt image for this potent and potentially empowering New Moon.
The Earth Element
As this New Moon falls in an earth sign, physical movement may be a way of connecting with your strength and solidness (key earth qualities).
The body and the physical realm are emphasised, so make an effort to organise your wellbeing, finances and environment.
Banish Baggage: Embrace Renewal
This Capricorn New Moon + Pluto pairing may help you overcome challenges or rise above difficulties. You may be able to leave behind baggage from:

I often describe a Pluto transit to clients as a time to ‘purge and purify’. When in the clutches of Pluto, life can seem intense and sometimes confronting, as if you’re obsessed with just one or two topics. This extreme focus serves to sharpen your attention and in turn forces you to go deeper than ever before.
Pluto may bring you into the depths or the darkness, but it does so to help you release what’s old, dead or dying. This idea of release is essential – it’s the purge part. As you release energy to do with old stuff you free up your focus and energy for new pursuits.
Rather than continue to pour energy into the past, this New Moon instead offers you a choice, and perhaps a prod or challenge, to dare you to reclaim energy and power, and to direct it towards something you want.
As you take the Pluto journey, from being controlled to empowered, from holding on, through letting go and embracing the new, you will find yourself in the driving seat again.
Saturn: New Moon Ruler
The ruler of this New Moon is Saturn. Saturn is currently in Scorpio, a sign that loves to lift the lid on life and poke around in the depths.
You may be intense, driven or determined. You may seek truth at all costs, rather than skim the surface. Diving into what is, rather than pretending is Scorpio’s way. Intimacy only comes after brutal honesty. If you want trust, be prepared to share truth.
Saturn is associated with wisdom, so forget being lighthearted and focus on what really matters. At the New Moon, Saturn is in the terms of Jupiter, which adds an uplifting, big picture quality. Hard work can lead to the manifestation of a dream now.
