Capricorn Zodiac Sign: Meaning, Dates & Characteristics

Capricorn (♑︎) (Latin: Capricornus) is the tenth astrological sign of the zodiac, originating from the constellation of the same name. It is symbolized by the sea-goat, a mythical creature with the upper body and horns of a goat and the lower body and tail of a fish.[1][2] Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits this sign from approximately December 22 to January 19.

The word Capricorn is derived from Latin, meaning "horned goat". The symbol for Capricorn can also be seen as two V's, which are the Hebrew and Phoenician letters "beth", and the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for house or tent.[3] The Phoenician letter beth corresponds to the Greek letter beta (Β, β) and later evolved into the Latin letter B, which is the initial letter of the Latin name of the sign.

Capricorn is an earth sign, and is associated with the elements of earth and water. It is also one of the four cardinal signs, which mark the beginning of a new season. In the Northern Hemisphere, Capricorn begins the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.
