Brobdingnagian: Definition & Origin of Enormous Size - Swift's Gulliver's Travels

Brobdingnagian is a term used to describe something or someone of enormous size. It was coined by English author Jonathan Swift in his 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels. In the book, Brobdingnag is the name of a fictional island inhabited by giant people, where the protagonist Lemuel Gulliver finds himself after his ship is wrecked. The Brobdingnagians are described as being twelve times taller than Gulliver, who is six feet tall. This means that the average Brobdingnagian would be about 72 feet tall. They are also described as being very strong, with a single Brobdingnagian able to lift Gulliver with one hand. The Brobdingnagians are a peaceful people, but they are also very curious about Gulliver and often treat him like a pet.
