Cancer is a sign currently in the cosmic spotlight. Mercury and Jupiter will activate this sign in unique ways between June 2013 – July 2014, and for the next few weeks, the Sun also lights up this sign.
Mercury: 10 Weeks to Think and Choose
Between June 1 – August 7, communication planet Mercury spends an extra-long time in Cancer. This extended visit coincides with a retrograde or backwards cycle, from June 25 – July 20. The whole 10 week period of Mercury in Cancer helps you rethink and re-organise the affairs relating to your Cancer area of life (see ‘Working with Cancer’ below).
It’s also likely to be an area of life where there is so much going on, things will be missed or overlooked. While Mercury is retrograde, take time to slow down and review, rather than try to start something new.
With Mercury retrograde information can be hard to find or confirm, so waiting until Mercury retrograde is over ensures you have time to uncover missing facts. New ideas are also likely to emerge, so premature promises may have to be reworked. For more on Mercury retrograde, pop over here.
Mercury Moment: Gemini and Virgo, signs ruled by Mercury, are often most sensitive to Mercury’s retrogrades.
The Sun: A Month to Take Charge
The Sun is also in Cancer, lighting up this area of life between June 21 – 22. The Sun’s influence repeats each year, so if you’ve been paying attention to your chart and yearly cycles, you’ll be familiar with which topics or areas of life you often dive into through this period.

The Sun adds heat, emphasis and suggests leadership is key to progress. If you aren’t familiar with your chart, check the ‘Working Cancer’ section below to find out which parts of your solar chart are in focus – and where you need to take charge in the next four weeks.
Jupiter in Cancer: A Year To Expand
Between June 26, 2013 and July 16, 2014 Jupiter moves through Cancer. This once-in12-year cycle brings expansion and understanding to this area of your life. (If you know your chart, check the house ruled by Cancer, if not, check the ‘Working with Cancer’ guide below.)
Jupiter is the largest planet, and wherever Jupiter goes, energy, attention and resources flow. This is often portrayed as a purely positive thing, but in astrology, as in life, big is not always better. It’s more appropriate to think of Jupiter as an expanding influence, such that what’s good about your Cancer area of life gets better, while what’s irritating or troublesome also grows, mostly so that you can do something to improve it.
Under Jupiter, growth and expansion are possible. Ideally, you focus on meaningful rather than haphazard growth, and expansion that brings you closer to manifesting some of your big picture life dreams. Think about the visions and hopes you have for your Cancer ruled area of life, and consider how you could nurture them in the year ahead.
The astrological energies are shifting. To find out how they blend with your personal chart cycles, book an astrology consult this July.
Cancer Symbols
General Cancer themes include home, family, mothers, nurturing, protectiveness and sensitivity. Cancer is a sign that’s traditional and conservative and inherently frugal. This sign, being a water sign and the home of the Moon, honours the cycle of life.
While Jupiter is in Cancer, things you’ve tended with care flourish, and those things you’ve ignored whither. As some topics or areas of life reach fullness, others are in a winter phase and diminishing. Working with Jupiter in Cancer can mean putting your heart into something you truly care about, even if that means not doing other, less important things.
