Alpha Aquarii is a multiple star system, consisting of at least two stars. The primary star is a yellow supergiant star with an apparent magnitude of +2.95. It is about 10 times more massive, 55 times larger and 1,500 times more luminous than the Sun. The secondary star is a blue main-sequence star with an apparent magnitude of +10.5. It is about 1.5 times more massive, 2.5 times larger and 20 times more luminous than the Sun.
Alpha Aquarii is a member of the _Beta Cassiopeiae_ moving group, a group of stars that share similar motions through space. This group is estimated to be about 18 million years old.
