Saint Gemma Galgani: Life, Mysticism & Stigmata - Catholic.com

Gemma Galgani (March 12, 1878 – April 11, 1903) was an Italian mystic, stigmatist, and lay member of the Passionists. Gemma was born in Camigliano, Tuscany, Italy, to a poor peasant family. She was profoundly devoted to the Passion of Jesus and longed to share in his sufferings. At the age of 21, she received the stigmata, which she bore for nine years until her death. Gemma was also a gifted visionary and had many mystical experiences throughout her life.

Gemma died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. She was canonised by Pope Pius XII in 1940. Her feast day is April 11.

Gemma is famous for her deep love of Jesus, her devotion to the Passion, her mystical experiences, and her heroic sanctity. She is a popular saint among Catholics, especially those who are suffering or who have a devotion to the Passion of Jesus.
